NINE

Every time Nora started to drift into sleep, alien hospital sounds yanked her awake. The cuts and scrapes throbbed with fresh pain as the minutes ticked on. Each tiny movement set off throbbing in her ribs. She was banged up and bruised for sure, but she’d sustained no injuries that wouldn’t heal on their own.

Not so for Felicia who had been closer to the vehicle when it exploded. The memory of her being thrown back and hitting the ground before Nora lost consciousness would not relent. It killed Nora to know her friend was so damaged. Would she die? An urge bubbled inside her, the need to offer up her feelings to the Lord, but she pressed it down.

“He wouldn’t help you even if you asked,” she muttered to herself.

No matter what Seth might say, God was not here in the hospital room, nor had He been there when her world fell apart as a teen, or more recently, when she and Felicia almost lost their lives. The explosion had ripped free the scars from old wounds and inflicted new ones.

Fear circled like a silent panther, waiting to pounce when she fell asleep, so she didn’t. Staring until her eyes burned, she fought the blanket of fatigue. Again and again she replayed the terrifying events. The ATV attack, the explosion.

Was Kai the culprit? And if so, why? She yanked the blanket up higher. If Kai was after her and Felicia, she intended to spot him coming. Thumbing her phone to life, she sought a photo of him online.

There wasn’t much to go on. The only reference she unearthed was an out-of-focus image of him at a desert stock car race, one finger raised in the air to celebrate his victory. It was a black-and-white picture. He looked remarkably like Zane, body lean and angular, with a sweep of thick hair that he’d cut short in the front and longer in the back. Thinner than Zane, but probably as tall or taller. His lower jaw was swallowed up by an unkempt bushy beard.

What would Kai possibly want with Felicia and Nora? It was true that Felicia was rekindling a relationship with Zane. Might Kai be jealous? Had he been interested in Felicia from back in their high school days? Nursed an obsession ever since? But why would that put Nora in his crosshairs too? The car bomb might have caught Nora accidently, but the letter bomb had been certainly meant for her to find.

The yearbook might hold a clue, she thought. The one Felicia had been scouring would have a better photo, maybe some candid shots of Kai. Would Jude be able to salvage anything from the wrecked book?

The minutes ticked into restless hours. She thought of Bubbles. They had to be getting close to her delivery and Nora was seized with the need to be on the ranch, breathing in the crisp air and tending to the animal who had brought her to Furnace Falls against all good sense. Bubbles, she thought with a smile.
